post feeding frenzy shabu shabu

It was my friend Alyson’s birthday dinner last Saturday so we all met at a great Japanese Shabu Shabu place in downtown Fullerton.

Mostly people that I know from Bunker and the various clubs but we’ve become friends outside the clubs too.  Lots of fun and great food!

I had the vegetarian dinner with a can of green tea.  That can was super thick….I don’t think the Japanese believe in conserving resources haha.  The waitress looked at me with sympathy after she tried to get me to order the beef.  Sorry lady, beef would make me puke.

Easter Feast

I hope everyone had a nice Easter weekend (whether you celebrate it or not).

I had probably one of the most relaxed weekends I’ve had in years. Only met with some friends for coffee on Friday night, and the rest of the weekend I stayed home. That’s a big deal for me…..2 nights in a row that I stayed home.

I didn’t do much cooking but I did blow a ton of money at the supermarket this week. Gotta love pay week 🙂
I bought a bunch of kombucha, as well as a bunch of herbal teas. I kinda got off track and have been drinking caffeinated teas which I don’t like to do…..so no more caffeine for me.

Had a nice Easter get-together with my family. My aunts made some really good vegan salads and of course hummus….my favorite. My mom made a delicious casserole using Daiya cheese, soyrizo, potatoes, tofu and soy breakfast links. Some onions and a few other ingredients too.

Dinner at Madeline Bistro

snatam

Went to a musical performance (or as they put it, a “co-formance”) last night in Hollywood. It was a kundalini yoga event with chanting and mantras and kriyas and it was incredible.   From the opening “Ong Namo” song to the end with “saaaaaaat naaam” it was one of the most uplifting and spiritual events I’ve ever attended.

Snatam Kaur performed, along with Guru Ganesha and special guest Gurmukh from Golden Bridge Yoga.  So much fun and uplifting!!! (left to right in photo: Gurmukh standing, leading a kriya, Guru Ganesha, Snatam, and their percussionist)

madeline bistro

Since we’d be in LA, I figured it would be a good opportunity to check out a vegan restaurant in the area, and lucky enough Madeline Bistro wasn’t too far away.  I ordered the Thai Red Curry and Kara got the Deconstructed Gumbo.

I’ve read so many rave reviews about the place and all I can say is that, despite all the highest praise, even that doesn’t do it justice. The entire menu looked incredible. The food was to die for. The atmosphere and staff were friendly and helpful.

Overall, it was one of the best dining experiences I have had in years.

Curry String Beans and Fried Tofu

I used to live in Long Beach, which is a fairly large city next to Los Angeles. It is a port city. I loved it there. I lived near the beach, in the arts district. That was while I was going to California State University Long Beach. Lots of cool artists and free thinkers and students of all stripes hanging around. It was also more or less the gay district, so needless to say there were lots of interesting people around, and it was a very inspiring place to live, artistically.

My favorite restaurant when I lived there 5 years ago was Chen’s. My room mate introduced me to it on the day we signed the rental papers for the place we had. Everything she recommended was delicious. And they have HUGE portions for a small price.

This past Wednesday I went back there for dinner for the first time since I left Long Beach. Did a photo shoot nearby with a friend and when it came time for dinner, I had the idea to check out my old stomping ground. I was worried they might not have anything for vegetarians and vegans but I was wonderfully surprised. They have a huge veg menu and it was even more delicious than the items I used to eat!

And a shot of Kara. Click on the photos to see the entire photo set ^_^

Buddhist Dinner

Posted in asian, dinner, events, lunch, restaurants, soup, sprouts, tofu on January 21, 2010 by nosferatofu

This past Saturday I hosted a veg meetup at the wonderful Buddhist restaurant, Bo Di Tinh Tam Chay.

This dinner proved to be quite popular, with about 30 people attending. Its a great place with wonderful atmosphere and very nicely decorated. We were there for about 3 hours and lots of great conversation took place.

I had the curry chicken dish but the various soups looked so delicious I kinda wished I had tried one of those!

Thai Peanut Burrito

thai peanut burrito

I’m trying my best to keep a regular posting schedule with this blog =)

So I took a picture of my lunch yesterday (forgot to do that today).  It was a thai peanut tofu burrito by Follow Your Heart.  VERY delicious and it was pretty filling.  It is surprisingly large.

If you ever see one in the super market, don’t hesitate to give it a try!

Fall Is Here!

And so is school. I finished my master degree in May, thinking I was finally free. But I was wrong. I’m taking programming classes now that are more difficult than anything I’ve ever studied before.

So……I’ve not had much time for cooking anything worth sharing. Most nights I’m studying till late, forgetting to eat, then at 9pm I notice the time, freak out and eat a microwave burrito or something. Terrible, I know.

I’ve been inspired by autumn though. Its my favorite season. I decided I would make this autumn the best yet. So I’ve been hitting the arts and crafts stores, making lots of Halloween inspired things, I’ve been painting again (when I have the time, which is not often). I started a watercolor painting 2 years ago and I’m still working on it!

I have been doing a bunch of photography and photoshopping. That’s probably my favorite form of art; photography and digital editing. I have a photoshoot coming up next weekend, which I look forward to. It’ll be medieval themed with a strong tarot/gypsy/occult style with my friend Irene, who is a bellydancer.

So anyway, I took the day off today because I saw one of my favorite bands, Satyricon last night, performing in Hollywood. Having the whole day to relax, I made a nice big lunch, which I managed to photograph. I haven’t made this in a while because its been too hot but now with the weather cooling, it is more fitting. Its a tofu scramble with gravy.

I’ve also been VERY busy with kittens. Yep, one of the neighborhood cats took a liking to my patio, so she brings me her kittens. I took one to a shelter, thinking she had abandoned it, but now there are more. They are making the cutest meows as I type this. I leave them alone though, I just watch and photograph because I don’t want to run the risk of the mom abandoning them if I handle them too much.
